Dear friends and visitors,
We have gathered here today to mourn the loss of a truly reliable friend. Not even two years of age, my loyal companion Matrox, nickname 250 GB Disk, passed away two days ago. Without any previous symptoms he lost his life under rather mysterious circumstances.
Let us all remember him, and my precious MP3 collection that he took with him, as the literally hot piece of storage device that he was. I hope that he is now watching me, if not my friends’ and ex-girlfriends’ pictures, that also died with him, from hard disk heaven above.
Okay, long story short: If you asked yourselves where I have been the last days – I had computer trouble and lost a lot of data. Well, just wanted to let you know.
If you have added me to your viral tags, don’t worry. I’ll add every newcomer tomorrow :-).

I feel with you. I´m sad about the good times, we 3 had together. This is the worst case of computercrash that can disappear. R.I.P. my friend.
My hard drive died this year too =[
I also mourn the passing of Matrox. Was there/will there be a memorial service? I think he would like that, don’t you think? If you need any pallbearers, I might be able to attend. Perhaps when you get a new HD you could name him Xortam and get him/her a friend named BackUpDrive.
I know how you feel! R.I.P. HD.
Very sad indeed, I morn your loss, and also take it as a timely reminded to back up my system.
It’s sad. I make backups every month and have nuked my hard drive countless times (when installing a dual boot system on linux for example) and I believe there is a method to freeze the hard drive for a day or so and then use it. It works for less than an hour afterward, but I read somewhere the story of a guy who did it and succeeded. Snce the drive’s already fried, it’s worth a shot.
That’s really sad… Nowadays, with the growing amount of data that one stores on the computer, the importance of backing up your information is indeed paramount. Seems like it’s time for me to do some backing up too!
Don’t be too sad bro!
I was reading an article that said that freezing the hard drive sometime will give you enough time to get the info off. I don’t really see this as working though.
Wow, after 20 years in the IT business, I’ve never heard this freezing solution, although I did once hear that freezing a car radio would clear the security code.
Take it from me, both are untrue.
Glad to see you’re back in blog action! I was beginning to have withdrawels. LOL
Don
Awesome. I just watched the map at wordpress being sure to be the only one out of the “old land” (can that be translated?) But hell no! A guy from Dollern. Unbelivable! .)
For all you out there: If you did not understand a word: It’s ok!
Lolx, don’t make me laugh over here
You describe the spoil as ” pass away”
I can feel the sad
lolx
i am sure he is now watching over you, and remember he will always be with you, in your heart and in your memories and every time you hear a song you’ll say that *** took it from me
so sorry to hear about your hd…but data can be recovered, can’t it be?
ouch, not even 2? that is truly painful…rest in peace!
here’s a question: what do you do with a dead hard-drive. throw it out only to find out someone has stolen all your stuff (and your identity). keep it around only to have the cops going through all your web-history to build a case against you (hypothetically speaking, of course). or maybe a safety box in the local bank would be the best. any thoughts
I think that the only way you can be sure that no one can ever get any data off your old hard drive is to properly dispose of it with a hammer or in a fire…anything less and I would be worried you could get info off of it.
He will be missed!
And then replaced…
May your Hard drive R.I.P, we have all lost a loved one, mine passed away last year but i know hes in a better place now….
You have my deepest sympathy. I HATE computer failures - and hard drive failures are the absolute worst. I learned my lesson a long time ago - back up, and back up often.
Thats truly sad. If you have the inclination you might want to consider building a FreeNAS - http://www.freenas.org - device to offload the important stuff for safe keeping.
I built one two weeks ago and have bee scheduling nightly backups to it for the last week.
My family and I are sorry for your loss. We will keep you in our thoughts.
That sucks about the MP3 collection. I hope you didn’t have a ton of time in on it. Hopefully the Dell holds out for a while. I guess I should start thinking about backing up my info somewhere just in case.
Such a bummer. Every time that happens to me I begin to rethink what I would need in a whole new system while I am researching new hard drives. At least now you have a reason to build a new computer.
I had a hard drive issue last month myself.
Lost over 250 contact info on my outlook.
Not very smart of my to not have a backup.
nice title and very powerful
I myself have mourned the lost of my hardrive..and my whole other computer is now useless; it is weird not being able to use it…kinda has sentimental value cause I had it for 10 years.
That sucks. I usually make a point to have my data backed up in a few different sources, so that if one of them fails I can get it back easily. External HDs are pretty cheap - Get 2 of them, and have them set up to mirror your main hard drive. I also burn everything to DVD so I can be sure I won’t lose it.
I have Matrox as well and it passed last month. I was so mad because I wasn’t able to recover my files. But as what my cousin have said everything in this world have time frame. Even our life has time frame so there is really nothing we could do but accept it. Yes it was indeed hard if some parts of our pc got problems. I can hardly eat myself when it happens to me.
Same goes with me - yesterday all my database for one of my precious blog gone missing because the hosting provider were closed.
My paid review all gone - lost about $400
I always mysteriously lose hard drives like this too. What exactly causes a hard drive to just die out? I have some hard drives that last for a decade, and others that extinguish in less than 2 years.
Data loss is one of the most frustrating things because it can feel like your months and months of work just vanished into thin air for no apparent reason. Technology is the most convenient hassle ever.
Oh my, sad to here that. I’ve also experienced that. I lost my photo collections and my website psds.
I remember the day I lost my first hard drive.
I back up like nobodies business now. USB drives, DVDS, CDs. It’s worth it.
hahah… what a hilarious title. Sorry to hear about the loss of your MP3 collection. I know how it feels:( may your hard drive rest in peace. i can feel your pain. have my condolences
Sorry to hear you hard drive died. That really is a pain. However you seem to have a great sense of humor about it. I was really laughing.
You should consider getting to of the same hard drives and making them a raid partition. That would greatly reduce your down time and make sure your data is safer. If you don’t know what a raid partition is, you should definitely check them out.
Dude, that is so awful. you’re taking it pretty well though with a sense of humor.
Hard drives are cannot be trusted. Always have a backup and backup your important files regularly. My brother has a hard drive from maxtor which broke down. He bought another one and it happened again within 3 months. then again in another 3 months when he bought another one!
It is always sad to lose a collection like that. I hope you had a giant ipod with most of your musicon there!
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog.
Don’t buy top of the range. Buy a new and upcoming product which will be good. It will last you a lot longer.
Regards Andrew
hahaha… very funny title. Sorry to hear about your hard disk and the loss of your MP3 collection. I know how it feels as I have experienced it. May your hard drive rest in peace. I can feel your pain.
Dude, that sucks. Losing all that data must really hurt..
Reminds me… I should go and create a backup… it’s only been about 6 months. Ha
Hard disk dieing is a nightmare especially for those like me that don’t create backups on regular basis.
Ouch! My friends hard drive died a few weeks ago and somehow, he was able to recover all the data. It’s a shame for all those pictures and mp3s to get wiped out.
250Gb isn’t too much for today, so you have good opportunity to buy better HD
I think that it great consider getting to of the same hard drives and making them a raid partition.
I make backups every month and have nuked my hard drive countless times and I believe there is a method to freeze the hard drive for a day or so and then use it. It works for less than an hour afterward, but I read somewhere the story of a guy who did it and succeeded.
That really sucks, sorry to hear about it. Data loss is one of those things that can really drive you nuts…
Sorry to hear about your loss. I cant imagine what would I do if i lost some, if not all, of my data. I backup my HD every 30 days, just to make sure.
I think every blank will be fill up.So,don’t worry.
Your pain is most certainly felt by one too many, nevertheless, it still hurts. Dont’ take it too hard, this day will come and go. Plus you’ve got lots of support from your fans. All the best and cheers.
I know how you feel
If you lost your data from your HDD then you can try this web site getdataback.com
Thanks
Its very sad to hear that your hard disk has crashed under mysterious circumstances.I think you should always keep a back up for the data you have in your hard disk.
Wow 2 years is not very long. On my old gateway it lasted over 10 years and it was still working fine when I dumped the computer. They don’t make them like they used to I guess.
it’s always sad when hhd’s die
i have several hdd and spread my data all over so if one dies i dont loose everyting. Also, i had a disk that was 8 years old in another computer. they keep alive depending on where they are and if they are chilled enouff.
Where will he be buried?
I recommend making backups so you don’t lose your data..
I feel your pain, we lost all our data in a computer crash a while back… Granted that was only because my dad deleted the reboot system!
I am sorry! That is one of the worst things possible to happen to someone. Last month, I had my laptop die and then my external hard drive crap out on my. I lost everything!
I am sorry about that. You should use other hard drives as well, and then you can track your info.
This is too bad. I understand how you feel too. As like what you said, I had a ‘friend’ who called ‘40gb hard drive’.. He had passed away without any symptom too. And my precious pictures and some important data died together with him. Let’s face it. And establish them all again. Even though some things inside can’t ‘reborn’… just let go the ‘can’t be undone’
That is really sad. I feel so bad about it. I understand how you feel. Its like half of our brain is blown off. My condolences to you.
So sorry to hear about your lose. Maxtor has left me down as well before. Lost my complete design portfolio that I had done at my early ages. Ever since then I’ve turned to Western Digital.
Take it easy my friend. Its not a fact. You should take it easy.
Did you get any data of your heard drive…? You can find some download link of data recovery software here. http://freestuffslinks.blogspot.com
I can feel your pain I had also passed through the same phase. I also lost a lot of useful information but don’t worry his soul will be always with you.
I feel your pain. My hard drive died about half a year ago and it was a PAIN!
Lovely well-written story! It’s definitely hard to lose your hard drive, enough to drive you crazy. That’s why I love flash drives, used to never believe in them, now I’m a convert.
I so Sorry to hear about the loss of your MP3 collection, more than of your drive. I think you’ve just inspired me to make a backup, though.
Because for just few months it is already exhibiting problems again and it seems that I do need new hard drive again. I wonder if you can recommend good hard drive to used at. I feel sad that I need to buy some new hard drive again.
Data loss really does suck. Thats why I make regular back ups! Failing to prepare for the worse is worse than preparing!
Live must go on.. go get a new drive and make a restore. Problem resolve!!
I feel your pain and I can tell you where you went wrong - it’s because you used a Matrox-branded hard drive. Learn from my mistake, my friend. Use Seagate-branded hard drives from now on. They last far, far longer than just 2 years. And you can quote me on that.
VIP HD RIP -> backup is heaven
very sorry to hear about this…i know how you feel, it just takes time to recover…during the recovery time you just need to let go because he also wants you to carry on with you life….R.I.P
That absolutely stinks. I love auto backup. You should really look into it. It works wonders.
I know where you’re coming from, man…my hard drive (forgot its name, just know it was in a Dell laptop) crashed back in September of 2005, and this was the one that was holding almost ALL of my projects for my job on it…I had to start from scratch after the crash. Lesson learned: ALWAYS back up your files!!!
I get to call my hours, as well as my rates. I really focus on building my skillet to a level where I can work as quickly and efficiently as possible, while turning out ever-better quality for my clients. I do this not to be able to keep jam-packing my workday, but to be able to have a lot of free time to myself, to relax and learn new skills (cooking, playing the piano).
Through a system of living frugally, and working efficiently, I’ve found myself doing as well financially as many of my friends and college alum working up to 60 hour work weeks, when I’m just down in the 30’s (sometimes less!). Thanks to www.worldfranchising.com. And in the end I feel like I’m a lot less of a worrywart and more upbeat on life after college than they are.
Good Informative post
Stumebled you cheers!
Will Keep in touch with you
LOL. RIP.
That is horrible! Your MP3 collection! How tragic. My thoughts are with you during this incredibly difficult time….
Yeah! it is horrible. Hope it won’t happen to you again.
So sad for you. Better luck next time.
I would cry, there is so much information on my hard drive that there would be no way of recovering it all if it were lost.
Awww…you poor thing!
My other laptops hard drive also died a couple of month ago, but no real damage was done since everything (well, almost everything) was backed up to another drive.
Nice Post. I am new here but will be visiting more often as you have done a good job.
I consider your effort for this article is indeed valuable. Its well researched, well portrayed and well formated informative content.
I really appreciate the work. Keep it up…..
That is lousy that it only last around two years. Quality control is hard to come by
Oh, I’m so sorry, RIP. You should have made a backup with all those importante files.
Hope you were able to recover some backups!
Such a bummer. Every time that happens to me I begin to rethink what I would need in a whole new system while I am researching new hard drives. At least now you have a reason to build a new computer.
Its really very informative post, thanks for sharing your valuable opinion here.
I have two ready to go to heaven as well. I feel your pain.
My HD always messes up! I learned to get a back up drive
My sympathies. I know how it feels.
Rest in peace. We all feel for you.
I’ve been there too. But a few years ago I started to use a special cooling case for disks and since then my disks are cool and running smoothly.
And always remember - backup is a good idea.
NICE POST
I Really enjoy to read your post…thanks for sharing….
I also mourn the passing of Matrox. Was there/will there be a memorial service? I think he would like that, don’t you think? If you need any pallbearers, I might be able to attend. Perhaps when you get a new HD you could name him Xortam and get him/her a friend named BackUpDrive.
Hi,
Its great post,
Thanks for sharing.
My condolences.

I consider myself a pretty good and careful driver but I don’t know if the dmv will think the same. I’m taking the test at Culver City. Some people said it was easy to pass some said it was hard. what do you think?
condolences to the famil of matrox! may he r.i.p. (this is a unique post! :D)

We have gathered here today to mourn the loss of a truly reliable friend Not even two years of age my loyal companion to 250GB disk
You have gone, you’ve left me, why did you go away?
I’ve tried to figure out what I could’ve done that day,
But nothing can change destiny, no one is to blame.
And this so called life I’m living will never be the same.
So many things unsaid and things I didn’t do.
But as long as I have memory I will remember you
Ohh! I am sorry for your loss. Please accept me condolences. We got to contact a Sherlock Holmes for this mysterious death.
I am sorry to hear that. I hope next time it will not happen to you again. Anyway, this is a very interesting post.lol!
I understand you, I know how you feel!:(
May Her soul rest in peice
I know how it feels! I recently said goodbye to my 160GB hard drive. It’s so frustrating when you think about all the hard-earned photos and music that was lost along with it.
Hi! Interesting post. I was searching around for posts on this subject for my blog. Thanks for your interesting post.
Can you by-pass computer (especially laptop) hard drive so that everything goes to a EXTERNAL hard drive? It would make exchanging hard drives a lot easier.
We have gathered here today to mourn the loss of a truly reliable friend. Not even two years of age, my loyal companion Matrox, nickname 250 GB Disk, passed away two days ago.
Thanks for the great tips! competition in online business today is very tight.
The WORST! This happened to me not so long ago - I had been backing up with Time Machine and manually, but still lost some important stuff…

we all miss her so………
I love your website design and your posts, keep up the good work.
Thats truly sad. If you have the inclination you might want to consider building a FreeNAS - http://www.allcarpictures.net/ - device to offload the important stuff for safe keeping.
I built one two weeks ago and have bee scheduling nightly backups to it for the last week.
Sorry for your loss
Hope you backed up the pics somewhere?
probably the reason behind this is your external hdd needs to be installed.. or probably your laptop motherboard doesnot support the extended hdd. check that… if things doesnot work out… then connect your laptop with your pc with a p2p lan cable configure the network and connect the hdd onto your pc… and transfer the files…
I make backups every month and have nuked my hard drive countless times (when installing a dual boot system on linux for example) and I believe there is a method to freeze the hard drive for a day or so and then use it.
I think I’ve heard of that. You put your HD in a ziplock baggy and freeze it so everything contracts. Supposedly you can use your HD for a few hours till it heats up and expands again.
I would like to appreciate the great work done by the web master and would like to tell everyone that they should post their interesting comments and should make this blog interesting. Sorry for your loss. I hope you have dealt with it well as it has been over two years. Although an Internet marketer never really get’s over a such a tragedy. My hard drive is the most valuable gadget in my house because it hold all my inventory and business supplies. I thought about getting a safety deposit box for it, plus a back-up. It even has my lengthy list of sites. Surely worth millions by itself.
HD you could name him Xortam and get him/her a friend named BackUpDrive.
If something happens to your computer or your hardrive and your iTunes library is wiped out, did you know that Apple doesn’t allow you to transfer the music and other files on your iPod to a new iTunes install?

I hold my breath everytime I turn my HD on….
Cheers…..
Generally hard drives are a long lasting objects. I have formatted my 360GB Seagette HDD for around 10 times in the last two years but sometimes it becomes a heck…. BTW as technology improves the cost of computer maintenance is considerably coming down. I am very sorry for sad demise of your HDD

I have had my HD pass away on a couple of occasions and brought it to the data recovery people all for naught. It’s a painful lesson that screams - backup drive! Sorry for your troubles.
keep it around only to have the cops going through all your web-history to build a case against you (hypothetically speaking, of course). or maybe a safety box in the local bank would be the best. any thoughts
I wanted to keep this quite for a little while, but I have decided to “clean” my system for the past couple of weeks.
Im very sorry for this, is better to have backup always!!!
Its so sad that your hard drive passed away. I will pray to god that he provides you with same friend of yours in future.
hope for new one….
i think you can find a new one

Man, can I relate to your pain. I’ve had some pretty bad luck with computers, but in my case it was from some Trojan getting into my system and making my computer behave strangely. As frustrating as it was, I had to reformat my computer a couple of times. Computers are wonderful, but they do come with a whole list of frustrations and expenses.

If you think you’ve lost your data, Don’t Panic! There are solutions. In fact there are several ways of repairing the hard drive and other ideas by which you might recover the data!

Then bringing this worry up to someone else, you can also get their take on the situation, and they just may have a solution to the issue! Friends are great for sharing things like this, heck it’s even beneficial to hop onto your favorite social networking site and throw the question out to the ethers! I’ve done that quite a few times and the responses that come back either solve the issue, or spur a thought process within me that will allow me to solve it.

Everyone’s got a list of things to do as blogger, or things not to do. There’s so many lists these days for these kinds of things, it’s getting a bit frustrating. Really, the key to blogging is churning out quality content. This will never change, so long as the target audience is still for humans. So I guess if I was forced to produce a list, it would only have that one item.

Well i mostly see this kind of things in all blogs that peoples are always commenting about different matters and topics instead of the topic they are on to, so this kind of things really makes me upset, because i always expecting to spread conversation at this kind of blogs and forum for improves my knowledge base. www.Gordoniihoodia.net
It’s sad. I make backups every month and have nuked my hard drive countless times (when installing a dual boot system on linux for example) and I believe there is a method to freeze the hard drive for a day or so and then use it. It works for less than an hour afterward, but I read somewhere the story of a guy who did it and succeeded. Since the drive’s already fried, it’s worth a shot.
Condolence.
It really is difficult to lose your hard drive.. especially if he died with your very important files.
